SSE Up 3.32% As Consumer Confidence Builds For Chinese Economy Print E-mail

Stocks surged today on the back of renewed consumer confidence and overall better profits reporting for Q1 2009 vs the previous 2008 quarter. Key sector performers were Real Estate, Materials and Resources.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closed marginally higher at 2,559.91 up 3.32% or 82.34 points and the Shenzhen Component Index closed at 9,899.67 up 4.18% or 397.15 points. Combined turnover increased to RMB 221.65 bln, up from 194.14 bln the previous trading day.

SSE Marginally Up Led By Real Estate But Banks And Securities Weaker Print E-mail

Markets stayed in positive territory for most of the day led by real estate but banks and securities were weaker on lower earnings reports with Citic Securities plunging 3.88%. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closed marginally higher at 2,477.57 up 0.38% or 9.38 points and the Shenzhen Component Index closed at 9,502.52 up 1.27% or 119.31 points. Combined turnover increased to RMB 194.14 bln, up from 179.16 bln the previous trading day.

Finance and Insurance Industrial and Commercial Bank (601398) down 0.49% to RMB 4.09, China Construction Bank (601939) down 0.45% to RMB 4.41, Bank of China (601988) down 0.85% to RMB 3.50, Bank of Communications (601328) down 0.44% to RMB 6.78, China Merchants Bank (600036) down 2.64% to RMB 15.50 and China CITIC Bank (601998) down 1.82% to RMB 4.85.

Ping An Insurance (601318) up 1.15% to RMB 39.70, China Life Insurance (601628) up 0.08% to RMB 23.64 while CITIC Securities (600030) plunged 3.88% to RMB 24.25 after revealing a 41% drop in 2008 profits YOY.

Real Estate China Vanke (000002) up 2.17% to RMB 8.48, Poly Real Estate (600048) surged up 8.25% to RMB 19.42, Gemdale Corporation (600383) up 9.80% to RMB 12.32, Beijing North Star (601588) up 2.20% to RMB 4.64, Huafa Industrial (600325) up 3.40% to RMB 17.03 and China Enterprise (600675) hit the maximum daily up limit of 10% to RMB 12.41.

Shanghai To Become An International Finance And Shipping Centre Spurs SSE Up 2.78% Print E-mail

Markets managed a steady climb throughout the day led by finance, construction and real estate sectors on news of China's determination to turn Shanghai into an international finance and shipping centre by 2020. Other factors influencing the market include talk of using the yuan (renminbi) as a regional settlement currency as well as a reserve currency.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closed at 2,468.19 up 2.78% or 66.75 points and the Shenzhen Component Index closed at 9,383.21 up 3.06% or 278.91 points. Combined turnover increased to RMB 179.16 bln, up from 137.42 bln the previous trading day.
